Hints on Travelling with asthma

During holiday time traveling need not be a problem for people with asthma if they are prepared. The following steps can be taken to ensure your asthma management is kept under control while you are away from home.

Visit your doctor before your trip

Ask your doctor or natural healthcare practitioner for a written Asthma action plan and a letter outlining what treatment you require in case of an emergency. Have your doctor review your current asthma medication. If you know your asthma symptoms gets worse when you travel, your doctor may prescribe extra asthma medicine for your trip.

Be prepared

Make sure you have enough asthma medication and the right equipment including asthma inhalers with you before you travel. If you also use natural asthma treatment don’t forget to take your homeopathics or other natural remedies as well. Make sure that you keep asthma medicines in your hand luggage as well as your stowed luggage.

Know your triggers

It is always important to be aware of the things which aggravate your asthma. Some people may find that their asthma symptoms deteriorate while they are away, while others find that it improves. If you find your asthma improves (or you have more asthma attacks) you may be able to isolate an asthma cause you were not previously aware of. You may then be able to make changes in your lifestyle that will help your overall asthma treatment.

Some triggers that may change while you are on holidays are variations in temperature, pollution levels, pollens and grasses, surrounding animals, different foods to those normally consumed. If you eat out more when on holidays there may be more preservatives or additives, dairy or wheat products than you would normally consume.

The more you are aware of what your asthma triggers are the more you will be able to have an enjoyable and stress free holiday. Being subjected to different circumstances may also lead to a better understanding of your asthma triggers which may lead to better asthma management in the future.
